hese days, many people don't want metal in their mouth for either perceived health concerns or just for how it looks. Originally, white fillings looked good, but they cost more and didn't last very long. John H.Today, there are two types of white fillings. The first are plastic fillings that are placed in one visit to the office. They cost a little more than metal and last almost as long.

The real advances have been made in laboratory processed white fillings called "inlays" and "onlays". They are beautiful, strong, and usually long lasting. The cost is similar to a gold "inlay" or "onlay". Like most things in life, if there is more value, there is more cost, but they are truly worth it if you want solid white fillings instead of ugly metal.

The good news about white fillings is that you can do them one at a time as your older fillings need to be replaced or, if you can afford it, you can do them all at once. These fillings require no more effort or anesthesia than the old metal fillings. White inlays or onlays are actually glued into the tooth and there is now a body of research that claims that because of this the tooth ends up stronger after such a procedure, less prone to problems down the road.
