Protecting Your Smile

aving a beautiful smile, either naturally,
or because a dentist helped it along is no good if your teeth are injured in an accident.
As a society, we are much more active today with sports and active pursuits that can
injure teeth and gums. Everything from contact sports such as hockey, basketball, and
soccer to activities you wouldn't expect, such as water skiing, squash, or even bicycling.

Wearing a mouth guard, custom made by your dentist,
to fit your teeth in their present state, could be the best insurance policy you ever
purchase. One tooth injury can cost thousands of dollars and a lifetime of dental misery.
And if you compare this to the small cost in expense and time involved to fit you to
"your" mouth guard, I would be remiss not
to recommend it highly. After all, I should know. I've suffered severe dental damage while
playing hockey. It can happen all too easily. The best approach is to be prepared.

A mouth guard requires only two visits and will
usually last from two to four years of active sports participation. Using modern vinyl
plastics that are very strong, mouth guards can be made thin so that they don't interfere
with your breathing. For the "kid" in all of us, they can also be made in many
different colors.
